Is Oakland Practical as a Day Trip?

Oakland is about 11.8 miles from Twin Peaks Hotel, making it a realistic outing from San Francisco. The easiest plan is to pick one part of Oakland rather than try to cover the whole city: BART puts you near downtown, while the ferry arrives at Jack London Square.

For a compact day, start with a neighborhood or museum stop, then leave time for a walk around Lake Merritt or the waterfront. Your choice of arrival point can shape the day: downtown is convenient for Old Oakland and Chinatown, while the ferry gives you a direct arrival at Jack London Square.

If you’re still planning the San Francisco part of your stay, this one-day San Francisco itinerary can help you keep the city visit separate from your Oakland outing. For local connections and walking options, see how to get around San Francisco by transit and on foot.

Getting from San Francisco to Oakland

Getting from San Francisco to Oakland

BART and the San Francisco Bay Ferry offer two ways across the bay. BART is useful if you want to arrive downtown; the ferry is a direct option for Jack London Square. Choose based on where you plan to spend the day, then check the operator’s trip information for your travel date.

BART to downtown Oakland

Take BART to 12th St./Oakland City Center, at 1245 Broadway. The station is near Old Oakland and Chinatown, and a few blocks from Jack London Square. That makes it a practical arrival point if you want to start downtown or continue on foot to one of those nearby areas.

BART runs from 5:00 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, 6:00 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and 8:00 a.m. to midnight on Sundays. Train times vary by date and route, so use BART’s Trip Planner for departure and arrival times and planned delays.

You can pay at fare gates with a contactless bank card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay. All BART stations have elevators and extra-wide fare gates for people with disabilities and travelers with large luggage.

Ferry to Jack London Square

San Francisco Bay Ferry runs daily between Downtown San Francisco, Oakland Jack London Square, and Main Street Alameda. The listed Oakland crossing takes approximately 15–25 minutes, depending on direction. For the San Francisco-to-East Bay route, board at Gate G1 at the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal.

The ferry route may use an alternate schedule on holidays. Before you settle on a departure, check the official site before you go: BART for train times and service information, and San Francisco Bay Ferry for its schedule and fares.

Choosing an Oakland Area to Visit

With BART’s downtown station as a starting point, Old Oakland and Chinatown are close by, and Jack London Square is a few blocks away. If you’d rather center the day on a museum and lakeside gardens, Oakland Museum of California is one block from Lake Merritt BART station, at 1000 Oak Street.

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Friday hours extended to 9:00 p.m.; it is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Its garden is free during regular museum hours, and you don’t need a museum ticket to visit Town Fare. That gives you options for a shorter museum-area stop as well as a longer visit.

For outdoor time, the Gardens at Lake Merritt are a seven-acre collection of themed gardens in Lakeside Park. The Rotary Natural Science Center at Lake Merritt Boat House, at 568 Bellevue Avenue, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It closes on City of Oakland holidays, and additional closures may occur.

A Flexible One-Day Plan

Start by choosing your arrival point and a main stop. For a downtown-focused day, ride BART to 12th St./Oakland City Center and begin around Old Oakland or Chinatown. If you take the ferry, start at Jack London Square instead. Either option keeps the first part of the day centered near where you arrive.

For a museum-and-lake day, head to Oakland Museum of California, then continue to the Gardens at Lake Merritt. The museum’s one-block distance from Lake Merritt BART station makes this pairing straightforward. Check the museum’s hours before setting your timing; Friday is the day with extended hours.

If you’re choosing the gardens and nearby nature center, note that their schedules differ: the gardens are in Lakeside Park, while the Rotary Natural Science Center has set Tuesday-to-Saturday opening hours and may close on holidays or for additional reasons. Keep the center as an optional stop rather than building the whole outing around it.

Another possibility is Oakland Zoo, but its hours call for an earlier start. General-admission hours list entry from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with last ticket sales at 1:30 p.m. and closing at 4:00 p.m.; the zoo recommends booking admission tickets in advance.

Its gondola opens daily at 9:30 a.m., with the last ride up at 2:30 p.m. and last ride down at 3:30 p.m. Inclement weather can force the zoo or gondola to close.

Return Trip Planning

Before leaving your last stop, check the return service for the route you chose. BART’s Trip Planner provides departure and arrival times and planned-delay information, while ferry timetables vary between weekdays and weekends and may change on holidays.

Leave enough time to get back to the station or ferry terminal rather than relying on a specific departure without checking it.

If you’re heading back by ferry, remember that the San Francisco-bound crossing is listed at approximately 15–25 minutes, depending on direction.

For BART, service runs until midnight on weekdays and Saturdays, and until midnight on Sundays, but the best train for your return depends on your date and route. A quick operator-site check can help you confirm the practical details before you set out.
